In one of the worst genocides of the 20th century, about a million Rwandans were killed, most over the course of just one hundred days in 1994. To bring the leaders and planners of the war crimes to justice, the country participated in the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. As well, it set up system of local traditional style courts to deal with the general population who participated in the genocide.
