Ferrous Metals: Properties, Processing and Uses

A wonderful introduction to the use of ferrous metals in the production of manufactured products in everyday life. It considers the full range of steels together with the reason why each is selected for a particular use. The effect of varying percentages of carbon content is explained together with the relating properties and uses of the steels. The segment on heat treatment considers a very good layman's understanding of how the properties of various steels can be enhanced e.g. hardening, tempering and annealing. Physical properties of steel often need to be determined and the program looks at ways of measuring and testing for tensile strength, toughness or impact strength, malleability and ductility. The final segment considers a number of common examples of protecting steels from the ravages of chemical effects such as rust. These include hot dip galvanising, zinc aluminium coating, chrome and nickel plating. The program enables students to appreciate the impact steel has on manufacturing. The proper selection of the type of steel is critical to our health and safety as well as the life of the product.
