The Worst Jobs in History S01 • E02 The Middle Ages

Time traveller and host, Tony Robinson takes us to the Middle Ages, in this week's episode of The Worst Jobs in History. The Middle Ages is the 500-year period that ended just before 1500. It was the time when the great cathedrals and castles of England were built, the time of the Crusades, of Bishops and Barons, when Magna Carta was signed and when Robin Hood and his merry men terrorised Sherwood. Tony uncovers his fair share of dangerous and disgusting work. He investigates the lives of the poor souls who had to dish out medieval cures, and those who became human hamsters making cathedrals possible and those who walked in wee to support an entire economy. High on the list of disgusting jobs included being an Arming Squire (a Knight's servant), it could be menial, dirty, unhygienic and could get you killed. A barber surgeon was a gruesome way of earning a living; haircuts went hand in hand with amputations and blood-letting. But possibly the worst was the life of a fuller who would spend at least two hours a day wading in 20 litres of stale urine to make wool soft and malleable. Through a mixture of narrative, reconstruction, experiment and imagination Tony gets as close to the historical experience as possible. PRODUCTION DETAILS: Produced by Spire Films for Discovery Networks and Channel Four. Devised by Tony Robinson and David Willcock. Produced and directed by Nigel Walk.
