Geraldine Doogue presents a Compass special on the canonisation of Mary MacKillop from the Vatican in Rome. This program includes highlights of the ceremony in St Peters Square presided over by Pope Benedict XVI, and attended by more than 8000 Australian pilgrims. Geraldine also visits the sites that were part of Marys 19th century journey to Rome to gain Papal approval for her order. And, she calls in on Australias first resident Ambassador to the Holy See, Tim Fischer and speaks to Jesuit priest Father Paul Gardiner who travelled from Penola, in South Australia where Mary started her first school, to witness the culmination of the work he began in 1983 to prove her cause for sainthood.
