Gene Hackman and Willem Dafoe star in this drama, winner of an Oscar and three BAFTAs and based on true events, which sees two FBI agents investigating the disappearance of three civil rights activists from a small Southern town in the 1960s. Sent to a small town in Mississippi after three civil rights activists are reported missing, FBI agents Rupert Anderson and Alan Ward soon discover that their radically different approaches may both help and hinder their investigation. Anderson, a Southerner, understands the dangers of dealing with and investigating the Ku Klux Klan, who appear to be linked to the local sheriff's department but his brutal methods of obtaining evidence and exacting revenge horrify his partner. Ward, on the other hand, employs a more methodical approach, but both are horrified when the wife of the local sheriff (Frances McDormand) is attacked for providing information which leads to the discovery of the three activists. Despite their differences, both Ward and Anderson are determined to root out the evil lurking in the town, which will require all of their courage as they take on the ingrained racism of the South.
