Heaven on Earth Hinduism

Shot in 36 distinct locations in 14 countries, combining religion, art, history and travel, this documentary series explores how six major world religions have expressed the spiritual yearnings of the faithful in art and architecture. In this episode, presenter Christy Kenneally begins his search for Hinduism as it is expressed in art and architecture in Varanasi - the oldest inhabited city in the world. A microcosm of Hinduism, it has always attracted a large number of worshippers and pilgrims, some of whom come to Varanasi to die and be cremated on one of the pyres set up along the banks of the Ganges. They believe that by doing so, they will attain liberation from the cycle of birth, death and reincarnation and go straight to heaven. Christy then travels south to Mamallapuram, once a port city of the Pallava kings, to visit the temples, caves and rock sculptures of that period with his last stop in Khajuraho, central India, with its temples built by the Chandella kings.
