Morning Sun S01 • E02 The New Long March

"It was an age ruled by both poet and the executioner. The poet scattered roses everywhere, while the executioner cast a long shadow of terror", says Zhu Xueqin in this revealing documentary, Morning Sun. Part two of Morning Sun continues its exploration of one of the most powerful movements of the 20th century - the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution. Footage from the day interspersed with interviews from those who were on the frontline including head of state Liu Shaoqi and the extraordinary dissenter Yu Luoke create the film's conversation, charting for viewers the psychology and emotional topography of high-Maoist China. Morning Sun is a film about the cultures and convictions that created the language, style and content of a mass movement that infected the imagination of rebels and revolutionaries throughout the world. It is equally a meditation on the nature of revolution, the ideologies of which formed the lament of the 20th century.
