This program tells the inspiring story of one of the 17th century's great educational pioneers - and one of the great female religious figures of her time. Mary Ward (1585 - 1645) and her companions came to be known as 'the English ladies' and founded religious communities and schools throughout Europe. This saintly pilgrim was jailed by the Inquisition and branded a heretic by the church she loved, for her dangerous vision of what women could and would do. This is both a gripping re-telling of Mary's life and work, and an exploration of two of the projects where her followers today are changing the world for the better.
