Compass The abbey

Part 2 of 3. Compass puts the monastic life to the test in this extraordinary three part series - a first for Australian television. The Abbey, home to Australia's oldest enclosed order of nuns, agreed to let ABC TV invite five ordinary women to live in their cloister 24/7 for just over a month. And they allowed unprecedented access to film the experiment. From vastly different backgrounds and with mixed views toward faith the women (chosen from an Australia-wide call out) leave behind the hurly-burly of modern life to embark upon a search for meaning, God and self. A wonderful exploration of the hidden world of a Benedictine order and its power to transform everyday lives. Episode Two finds all five women struggling with the demands of monastic life and their personal demons. Luckily the Sister mentors are on hand. Craft work, farming and prayer provide welcome respite for some; additional challenges for others. Our five women are invited to a postulant's graduation and witness her being ceremonially 'clothed' in her habit. Sister Hilda urges them to go deeper. But there's resistance from all sides!
