Beyond the Nuclear Family

This programme looks at the changing roles, structure and functions of the family throughout time. What does it mean to belong to a 'family'? The programme represents a historical view of the family style throughout history and what society expects, and then contrasts this with the family form today. A range of possible social, emotional, environmental, economic and health considerations are presented as possible reasons for family structures changing. It looks at how family member's roles have changed and how this has impacted on the family now through statistics, an interview with a representative from The Institute of Family Services, and various other sources, including frank interviews from family members themselves. Where is the family heading in the future? The programme leaves you thinking about the role of the family in the future, particularly in this increasing technical age of computer links to widespread and virtually anonymous communication and virtual relationships. Are we heading to 'virtual' families? Can we have a 'Sims' (plastic) family of our own?
