Deconstructing Australian History Vietnam War

This programme looks at Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War. It heralded a time of massive social upheaval and political controversy throughout Australian society, and brought into question the whole notion of following our political and strategic allies into combat. A range of notable academics and other prominent figures feature in this programme, including former Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser, who was Minister for the Army in 1966 under PM Harold Holt, and continued to serve in the ministry of two subsequent prime ministers; historians Humphrey McQueen, Dr Corinne Manning, Dr Val Noone; former Victorian MP Joan Coxsedge – one of the famous ‘Fairlea Five’ – young mothers who were jailed for distributing anti-conscription material on Federal Government property; as well as Vietnam veteran, Rob Edgell. A fascinating range of opinions and reflections are presented – both by those who were involved in and close to the action in the late 1960s and early 1970s; and those who have spent years studying the impact of Australia’s involvement in this controversial war.
